Prayer in practice
الصلاة في الواقع العملي
Knowing how to pray is the first step. This module answers what happens next: when each prayer's window opens and closes, what to do about a prayer you missed, how prayer changes when you travel, and what makes Friday different.
When each prayer's time begins and ends
- 1
Fajr: from the true dawn until sunrise.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 612 - 2
Dhuhr: from just after the sun passes its highest point until an object's shadow equals its own length.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 612 - 3
Asr: from the end of Dhuhr until sunset, though praying it before the sun yellows is better.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 612 - 4
Maghrib: from sunset until the red twilight disappears.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 612 - 5
Isha: from the end of the twilight until midnight, and in necessity until the true dawn.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 612
A prayer you missed
- 1
A prayer missed through sleep or forgetfulness is prayed as soon as you remember, and there is no sin in it.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 597 - 2
Make it up in the order the prayers fall where you can.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 598 - 3
If many prayers were missed over a long period, make them up gradually alongside the current prayers rather than abandoning the effort.
The schools agree that missed obligatory prayers are made up. They differ over prayers left deliberately over a long period, so ask a local scholar about your own case.

Praying while travelling
- 1
A traveller shortens the four-unit prayers to two: Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha.
Quran: Quran 4:101 - 2
Fajr stays two units and Maghrib stays three.
Maghrib is not shortened. The narration establishes the shortening of the four-unit prayers; that Maghrib stays three is by established practice.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 1090 - 3
Dhuhr may be joined with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha, in either the earlier or the later time.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 705 - 4
The schools differ on the distance and duration that make someone a traveller. Follow what your local mosque teaches.
The narration records a journey on which the prayer was shortened. The thresholds of distance and duration are inferences the schools draw from reports like it, and they differ.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 1081
Friday prayer
- 1
It replaces Dhuhr on Friday and is obligatory on adult men who are resident.
Quran: Quran 62:9 - 2
It is two units, preceded by a sermon in two parts, which is part of the prayer.
Hadith: Sahih Muslim 861 - 3
Listen silently during the sermon. Speaking during it removes its reward.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 934 - 4
Bathing, wearing clean clothes, using fragrance, and arriving early are all recommended.
The narration names the bath. Clean clothes, fragrance, and arriving early are established by other reports and are agreed to be recommended.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 877 - 5
Women may attend but it is not obligatory on them; they pray Dhuhr if they do not.
The four schools agree Jumuah is not obligatory on women, who pray Dhuhr instead if they do not attend. The narration usually cited for this is graded differently across collections, so it is presented here as the agreed position rather than tied to one number.
