Islamic Terms (23)
Allah
الله
The Arabic word for God. The one and only Creator and Sustainer of all existence.
Quran
القرآن
The holy book of Islam, the literal word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibril over 23 years.
Hadith
الحديث
A recorded saying, action, or approval of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Collections graded as 'sahih' (authentic) are the most reliable.
Sunnah
السنة
The way of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — his practices, habits, and teachings that Muslims strive to follow.
Salah
الصلاة
The five daily obligatory prayers. Also called salat or namaz in some cultures.
Wudu
الوضوء
Ablution — the ritual washing performed before prayer to achieve a state of purity.
Rakah
ركعة
A single unit or cycle of prayer. Each prayer consists of 2, 3, or 4 rakaat.
Dua
الدعاء
Personal supplication or prayer to Allah. Can be made at any time, in any language.
Iman
الإيمان
Faith or belief. Specifically, belief in the six articles of faith.
Tawhid
التوحيد
The Oneness of Allah — the most fundamental concept in Islam. Allah is One, with no partners.
Shahada
الشهادة
The declaration of faith: 'There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.'
Qibla
القبلة
The direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, which Muslims face during prayer.
Kaaba
الكعبة
The sacred cubic structure in Makkah. It was originally built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail.
Masjid
المسجد
A mosque — the place of worship for Muslims. Literally means 'place of prostration'.
Ummah
الأمة
The global community of Muslims, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or language.
Haram
حرام
Forbidden or prohibited in Islam (e.g., consuming alcohol, pork, lying).
Halal
حلال
Permissible or lawful in Islam.
Jannah
الجنة
Paradise — the eternal reward for righteous believers in the Hereafter.
Taqwa
التقوى
God-consciousness or piety. Being aware of Allah in all your actions.
Dhikr
الذكر
Remembrance of Allah through repeating His names, phrases of praise, or Quran recitation.
Sawm
الصوم
Fasting — abstaining from food, drink, and intimate relations from dawn to sunset.
Zakat
الزكاة
Obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on qualifying wealth, given to those in need.
Hajj
الحج
The annual pilgrimage to Makkah, obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able.
Essential Arabic Phrases (13)
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Bismillah
In the name of Allah
Said before eating, drinking, starting any task
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
Al-hamdulillah
All praise is due to Allah
Said to express gratitude, after sneezing, after eating
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ
SubhanAllah
Glory be to Allah / How perfect is Allah
Said to express awe or amazement at Allah's creation
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Allahu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest
Said throughout prayer, and to express that Allah is greater than everything
إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
In sha Allah
If Allah wills
Said when speaking about future plans or intentions (Quran 18:23-24)
مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Ma sha Allah
What Allah has willed
Said to express appreciation or admiration without envy
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ
As-salamu 'alaykum
Peace be upon you
The Islamic greeting — say it to every Muslim you meet
وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ
Wa 'alaykum as-salam
And upon you be peace
The response to the Islamic greeting
جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا
Jazak Allahu khayran
May Allah reward you with goodness
Said to thank someone — the Islamic way of saying 'thank you'
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ
Astaghfirullah
I seek forgiveness from Allah
Said when seeking repentance or after making a mistake
لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
La ilaha illallah
There is no god but Allah
The most powerful statement of Tawhid (monotheism) — say it abundantly
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (ﷺ)
May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him
Said after mentioning the Prophet Muhammad's name — this is a sign of love and respect
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un
Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return
Said upon hearing news of someone's death or any calamity (Quran 2:156)
